    Local Phi Beta Kappa Chapters

The Alpha of Maine chapter of Phi Beta Kappa received its charter on October 25, 1824, the sixth charter granted to a college or university since the Society's founding in 1776 at William and Mary.

The Beta of Maine chapter was founded in 1896. Over the years, the chapter has played a larger role in Colby’s community of scholars, giving awards to students demonstrating the highest levels of achievement, providing funds for scholarly activities, and sponsoring events that strengthen the intellectual atmosphere of the College.

The Gamma of Maine chapter was founded in 1917. The chapter includes among its members noted civil rights leader Benjamin Elijah Mays.

The Delta Chapter of Maine was organized in 1923.  The Chapter continues to elect outstanding undergraduate students to join this most esteemed of honor societies.
